The importance of Veterans Day

Find out about the importance of Veterans Day and why it’s so essential

If you are grateful for the freedoms that this country has to offer to its citizens, then you may want to thank a veteran for their diligence and servitude to the country that we live in. Even though we have a holiday like Veterans Day to observe Veterans, do we as a society truly understand the importance of Veterans Day?

In this blog post, we will delve deeper into the significance of Veterans Day and why it’s not just a day off to relax but a day to honor and appreciate those who have served our country bravely. We will also provide some meaningful ways on how you can show your appreciation for our veterans, not just on Veterans Day, but every day. Because, in truth, one day is not enough to express our gratitude for the freedoms they have fought for.

What is Veterans Days

Veterans Day has a rich history; it’s not just a day off from work or school. It’s a day dedicated to veterans who have honorably served in the United States military. However, the significance of the day goes back over 100 years.

In fact, Veterans Day was originally named Armistice Day, announced by President Woodrow Wilson, which was observed on November 11, 1919, marking the first anniversary of the end of World War I.

However, it wasn’t Until President Dwight D. Eisenhower renamed Veterans Day to include veterans from World War II. the Korean War, and any other future war that may arise.

Veterans Day is officially observed on November 11 every year, regardless of the day of the week it falls on. For instance, the Veterans Day for 2023 will fall on a Saturday.

Your place of employment may have the day off either that Friday, November 10, or the following Monday, November 13, but that Saturday, the 11th, will be the day that veterans can reflect on their service and enjoy some of the perks that come with being a veteran.

Why Are Veterans Important

The importance of veterans cannot be overstated. Not only have veterans signed up in their youth to support and defend the United States of America from foreign enemies and terrorists alike, but the honor and selfless act of serving is a quality that not everyone possesses. Qualities that veterans naturally possess pay dividends throughout our society regardless of whether society acknowledges them.

Some of the qualities that veterans possess:

Honor and Respect: Veterans operate on a code of ethics, whether through religious beliefs or a high standard of morals. Veterans will be respectful and, whether you like it or not, will call you a sir or mame. To the average citizen, this may catch them off guard or even get offended, but to a veteran, it’s the only way to address someone they are meeting for the first time or someone they hold the highest respect for.

Role Models: Veterans will likely be great role models. They know how to clean up very well, and they keep their appearances sharp by keeping well-groomed and dressing appropriately for every occasion. With their disciplined behavior and strong sense of responsibility, they set an excellent example for younger generations to follow.

Great Educators: With a veteran’s unique experience, they are often great educators. The things they have endured and have been exposed to around the world give them a different perspective that translates to being great teachers and educators. Additionally, many veterans who joined the military did so to reap benefits such as the G.I. Bill, enhancing their educational opportunities. This combination of formal education and practical experience makes them particularly effective as teachers and educators in society.

Difference Between Memorial Day and Veterans Day

Memorial Day and Veterans Day are federal holidays in the United States that honor military service. However, both holidays have a distinct focus and purpose. It is essential to understand the difference between the two. So citizens who haven’t served and don’t know the etiquette can honor both days correctly.

Memorial Day: observed on the last Monday of May. It is an essential day to honor and never forget those who have died while serving in the U.S. military. It was initially known as Decoration Day following the Civil War, and it became an official federal holiday in 1971. On Memorial Day, it’s common for ceremonies to be held at cemeteries and war memorials, and many people visit the graves of fallen soldiers to pay their respects.

Veterans Day: is observed on November 11th and celebrates all U.S. military veterans, both living and deceased. Veterans Day is a special occasion to thank the brave men and women who have served our country.

Conclusion

Veterans Day is not just another holiday on the calendar. It’s a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by countless men and women in the service of our nation. Veterans not only safeguarded our freedoms, but they also enriched our society with their qualities of honor, respect, and dedication.

They serve as role models, inspiring younger generations with their discipline and responsibility. Their unique experiences and perspectives make them invaluable educators, sharing worldly wisdom and practical knowledge with those around them.

While we set aside November 11th to honor our veterans officially, we must remember their contributions and sacrifices every day. Let’s go beyond mere acknowledgment and actively show our appreciation.
